The project is aiming to reduce growth in traffic in the subsea tunnels between the municipalities Giske and Ålesund, improve public transport and increase the number who use bicycles to and from public transport through adapted solutions. The project will also contribute to urban development and increase attractiveness for the area on Ytterland in Giske.

As of today, there are almost 4,000 people who commute to work every day through the tunnels. In addition, there are students, shopers and air passengers. There were 12,500 cars through the tunnel one day in August in 2020 - in a period where the traffic to and from the airport, was reduces due to Covid-19. It is a goal for the project to reduce the traffic by private car through the tunnels and create an effective solution that contributes to a better environment, local sustainability, easier every day living, safer roads and development of the local community.

The owner of the project believes that without an efficient Park & Ride solution for the largest residential areas, the labor market will be weakened - this concerns especially companies in central Ålesund with a lack of parking. Park & Ride is a solution used both nationally and internationally, less used localy.

Payment for parking and bus ticket on the bus will be in one operation and automatic for the users. H.I. Giørtz has initiated a collaboration with Parkly AS to develop innovative solutions for this area.

The mobility hub in Ytterland will consist of 350 - 450 parking spaces and 150 - 200 parking spaces for bicycles - all under one roof. Direct access to the traffic terminal from the bicycle and commuter car park is planned.

All partners in the project are partners in United Future Lab Norway. The Future Lab will be the arena and facilitator in the project, and several actors will be invited in to be partners. Hopefully,  this project can become a template for further investment in the local area. It is a goal to use digital twins in the development of the project and the work of concretizing solutions.
